CAPILLARIA SP. WORMS

Capillaria sp. worms or their eggs can be commonly seen in fecal material of freshwater Angelfish (Pterophyllum sp.) and Discus (Symphonodon sp.), as well as their intestines.  This parasite is not only a parasite of these two species, but different species of the Capillaria genus can be found to parasitize nearly all teleost fish. It swims freely within the intestinal contents, consuming partially digested food before it can be absorbed by the fish. This parasite can be tolerated at low infection levels, but if the fishes immune system is severely stressed, these worms are able to make the situation worse by consuming nutrients needed by the fish.
These parasites can be treated using the same treatments as those for Camallanus sp. worms, including the garlic treatment.
